honestly, steam power is a lot stronger, and they're WAY cooler to see. if we go back to that, we could easily use sustainable fuel sources in them and do tons of work for less

steam in general has more starting power and power overall, but diesels have lower maintenance cost, more fuel efficient and requires less crew, so oftentimes diesel is just cheaper even when running multiple units together then one more powerful steam engine which is why diesel is so prevalent and widely used

steam engines, no matter what they are (traction engines, locomotives, etc) theoretically have an unlimited amount of power, it just comes down to traction and how strong the couplings are between cars

steam is superior, diesels-operating costs and ease of maintenance won the war. I've seen a single cylinder 20HP steam traction engine pull a 84,000 lb semi up hill. amazingly powerful and simple.

A good steamtrain operator can make it do backflips if they really wanted to. But thats just it, Steam is very difficult to operate compared to Diesel Electric. If you run the steam engine wrong, you're burning more fuel than needed, which is terrible for the environment, Or you kill the fire and the train stalls.

I think it would the coolest thing to be driving the challanger pulling 100 cars through the cold only wearing shorts and it’d start to struggle and flooring it just to feel the torque
