@insanemathtips: Replying to @caio #navierstokes #chatgpt #math #EngineeringTok #mathematics can’t believe they actually solved the Navier-Stokes equation! Here is a brief explanation as to how they did it!
So does this mean they can now simulate turbulent flow accurately?

no.. they used the work of a mathematician who had worked 4 yrs on it, and was close

130 Billion tokens to fucking solve Navier is crazy cheap for the scale of what it accomplished seriously people aren’t freaking out enough about how CHEAP this has made THINKING think of all the benefits to the world

its not solved they did part c and d which is just like asking about a technicality not the actual thing that has any use to humans

nope. they stole a mathematicians work he was using their AI for parts of his calculations. the people at anthropic figured out what he was working on and swiped it when he finished his work

In a class on partial differential equations I think they prove regularity results. In particular, showing a solution is smooth and without “blow ups” is something you need to prove for each equation. So from this perspective, I think the navier stokes problem is not so impressive cause someone might say there was no reason based on the equations to assume it would have all smooth solutions without finite time blow ups. I think we just initially hoped proving this would generate interesting new math as a by product. Kinda lame that ai just solved it. Hopefully some cool math still comes about.

It’s really not a brute force solution in the traditional sense. It took a lot of agents but ultimately it’s an analytical proof
