Honestly, one of my favorite genres of vintage LA photography might be dogs in cars. 😂 These incredible photos were taken by Gary Krueger, a photographer who spent much of the 1970s roaming Los Angeles with his camera, looking for the strange, funny + completely spontaneous moments that make this city what it is. And apparently, that included a LOT of dogs who looked like they had somewhere VERY important to be. Dogs riding shotgun. Dogs hanging out of windows. Dogs sitting behind steering wheels. Dogs staring into the camera like they’re late for a meeting in Beverly Hills. Basically, Los Angeles car culture at its finest. 🐕💨 But the story behind the photographer is pretty interesting too. Krueger came to Southern California from Cleveland and studied graphic design + photography at LA’s Chouinard Art Institute during the 1960s. After graduating, he worked for WED Enterprises, Disney’s Imagineering division, photographing Disneyland and its events before moving into commercial, editorial + personal photography. And it’s his personal photographs of everyday Los Angeles that I REALLY love. Krueger wasn’t necessarily looking for the postcard version of LA. He photographed the city as he encountered it: Hollywood Boulevard, Downtown LA, tourists, parades, performers, parties, oddball storefronts, street signs + all the wonderfully unexpected things happening in between. He described his approach as searching for “split-second juxtapositions in life,” which is such a perfect way to describe these pictures. Because there’s something almost cinematic about them. The dog doesn’t know it’s posing for a photograph. The driver probably has somewhere to be. The traffic is moving. The light changes. And for one tiny moment, everything lines up just right. Then it’s gone. These photographs, collected under the title Dogs in Cars, were made around Los Angeles in the 1970s. They’re not carefully staged pet portraits or elaborate studio shoots. They’re little slices of street life, caught by somebody who knew exactly when to press the shutter. And as much as I love the dogs, I might love the BACKGROUNDS just as much. 👀🔍 Look at those cars! The paint colors. The chrome. The upholstery. The old license plates. The clothes, streets, storefronts + signs. All those tiny details that probably felt completely ordinary to anyone passing by at the time. That’s the magic of archival Los Angeles photography. A photo taken because somebody saw a funny dog in a car eventually becomes a record of what driving around LA actually LOOKED like half a century ago. And in a city where entire neighborhoods can change almost beyond recognition, those everyday details become pretty extraordinary. These dogs fit right in. No movie premiere. No celebrity sighting. No famous landmark. Just dogs doing dog things in the middle of 1970s Los Angeles.
