@sheisapaigeturner: We had no idea this could be a symptom of strep throat. I wish I had known sooner and I’m sharing this and hope that it helps other parents if they go through the same thing. ##strepthroat##sickkids##parenting##motherhood

one symptom i always notice for my son who’s had strep many times to the point he barely shows any symptoms at all anymore even when he’s positive- he gets very very dark under eyes

My daughter was a freshman in college and developed strep so they gave her an antibiotic but they didn’t test her for momo. Long story short the combinations of mono and strep plus an antibiotic caused this

We had a family friend who had a delayed strep diagnosis and ultimately went septic. She unfortunately is no longer with us so this kind of thing scares me beyond belief.

getting my tonsils removed at 22 literally changed my life - it is so so so worth it for recurring strep

Growing up our pediatrician never accepted a negative rapid test result. They always double swabbed, so if it was negative they could send out a lab sample to be sure. Grateful he did because I almost never tested positive on the rapid, but I’d have a positive send out test.

My daughter was diagnosed with the PANS side of PANS/PANDA. It was honestly the most traumatic thing I’ve been through as a parent. It’s been 2 years, and it’s not gone but it’s better. But every loose/new tooth, sickness, growth spurt flares it up.

I just learned a few years back that you can get strep in your stomach! I wonder if that’s what’s happening to her.

My 3.5yo had strep four times back to back so finally I demanded that we start doing cultures instead of rapid tests to make sure that he actually got rid of it. Apparently antibiotics aren’t always 100% effective for everyone, also he could have been a carrier of strep, or he could have been being reinfected. We ended up switching from amoxicillin to Cephalexin and that worked. So relieved. We threw away toothbrushes and deep cleaned the cups and such. We don’t share drinks or food.

If you haven’t already, you should have her tested for Strep B. Most doctors only test for Strep A. My brother was like as a kid, sick all the time, and he has Strep B (also makes you more prone to Strep A)-it is a chronic, lifelong condition. But there’s treatment and then you know what to check for

Keep advocating for your kid. I took my (at the time 10 month old) into urgent care because I was at a loss for what was happening (she is my 2nd kid so some experience). Dr said it’s a “viral” thing but ran covid/flu. While the swab was processing and I was consoling my baby (fair), I saw 1 long white spot on her tonsils. Called the doc in to look. Dr said kids under 2 don’t typically get strep but we can swab….yup positive at 10 months old. The staff was surprised. Go with your gut and what you see.

Same experience with some variation- it actually triggered behavior AND tics for my then 4-5 year old - several times…2 days on antibiotics and the tics and behavior were gone. Interestingly, she got strep again age 6 and nothing was triggered.

Understood! Out of all the times I took my daughter and had her checked, I finally told them to let me swab her since I also saw it was a poor swab. Wouldn't you know it, she was positive. So the next time, different hospital, same scenero, except I told the Docotor to swab after she told me the test was negative and explained this very thing. It's usually, ma's, maybe a nurse, who do the swabs. I am an RN and was floored both times. When left untreated, strep can also cause heart complications! Not to mention absolutely miserable for them and contagious. I made it known to the facilities, these people need properly trained, especially when dealing with children! Our community hospitals have little staff with peds experience/education/equipment. Not acceptable. I tell them, this may seem very uncomfortable, but it's quick. I need to get a good swab to get them the proper treatment. Children may cry and be restless, we may piss the parents off, but at the end of the day, my heart as a mom to almost 5, I want the best as if they were my own. Many just don't care sadly. Advocate for your babies! If it looked like a shitty swab, tell them just that! Don't be afraid, they get paid whether your baby gets better or not! 🩷

We experienced the same with our oldest daughter around that age. Figured out she was a strep carrier. She wasn’t catching it from other kids, it was laying dormant constantly and would spike and give her a full blown infection. It was AWFUL.
