Y’all, I need somebody to tell me whether I’m being petty because I am genuinely considering asking my own sister to send me my money back. My younger sister is 26, and she’s pregnant with her first baby. I’m 32, and I have two children of my own. We’ve always been close. Not the type of sisters who talk every single day, but if she needs something, I’m there. When she announced her pregnancy, I was probably more excited than she was. I bought the first pack of diapers. Helped her pick out nursery furniture. Even took off work to go with her to an ultrasound appointment when her boyfriend couldn’t make it. So when she started planning her baby shower, I naturally offered to help. Her original budget was $1,500. Well, somewhere between picking decorations and choosing a venue, that budget turned into almost $4,000. She wanted a balloon wall, custom centerpieces, a dessert table, a photographer, and one of those big light-up signs with the baby’s name. I told her I couldn’t afford to cover everything, but I would contribute $1,200. And I did. Sent it straight to her. No questions asked. Then I spent another $180 ordering personalized party favors. Everything was fine until last Sunday. My sister called and told me she needed to talk about something. Apparently, her boyfriend’s mother was helping organize the guest list, and they decided they wanted the shower to be a more intimate event. Okay. Fine. Then she said: “So we’re only inviting people who have a really close relationship with both me and the baby’s father.” I said okay again. Then she got quiet. Y’ALL. THIS GIRL WAS TRYING TO TELL ME I WASN’T INVITED TO THE BABY SHOWER I HELPED PAY FOR. 😭 I actually laughed because I thought she was joking. She said her boyfriend’s family was uncomfortable with me attending because of something that happened at Christmas. Now let me explain THAT. At Christmas dinner, her boyfriend made a comment about how women with children shouldn’t expect men to financially support them. I told him that was an interesting opinion coming from somebody who had borrowed $600 from my sister the month before. Apparently, that embarrassed him. And now, THREE MONTHS LATER, his family is still upset. So I asked my sister: “Are you seriously telling me I can’t come to your baby shower because your boyfriend doesn’t like me?” She said: “I just don’t want any negativity around my baby.” BABY, WHAT NEGATIVITY?! So I told her that was fine. But since I wasn’t welcome, I wanted my $1,200 back. She immediately got upset. Said the money was already spent. Then told me: “I thought you were doing this for your niece, not for recognition.” I said: “And I thought I was helping throw a baby shower I was actually allowed to attend.” Then she started crying. And now our mother is involved. She said I shouldn’t punish an innocent baby because of adult disagreements. But I’m not taking anything away from my niece. I’ll still buy her gifts. I’ll still love her. I JUST DON’T THINK I SHOULD BE EXPECTED TO FINANCE A PARTY I’VE BEEN BANNED FROM ATTENDING. The shower is next Saturday. And apparently, my sister’s boyfriend’s cousin, who she met TWO MONTHS AGO, is invited. His coworker’s girlfriend is invited. Even his mother’s hairstylist is invited. BUT NOT ME. HER ACTUAL SISTER. THE ONE WHO PAID $1,200. 😭 I told her I wasn’t going to argue anymore. But I would no longer be contributing financially to the shower. And if any of the vendors could refund the money I paid, I wanted it returned. She responded: “I can’t believe you’re making my pregnancy about yourself.” Now my mom is barely speaking to me. My sister says I’m ruining her special moment. And her boyfriend posted something on Facebook about people who only help others so they can control them. SIR, YOU STILL OWE MY SISTER $600 FROM CHRISTMAS. PLEASE RELAX. 😭 But I’m genuinely hurt. Because I would’ve never imagined my own sister would accept my money and then tell me I wasn’t welcome
