@nourishingapothecary: Your prenatal doesn’t necessarily need to contain iron. In fact, there are good reasons why some don’t. Iron can interact with the absorption of other minerals in a prenatal, which is one reason some formulations keep it separate. It also means iron can be prescribed according to what you actually need rather than giving every woman the same dose. Your iron requirements should ideally be guided by your blood results, particularly haemoglobin, ferritin and the broader iron study picture. And if you do need supplemental iron, the form, dose and timing matter. The same principle applies to your prenatal as a whole. I’m looking at the forms and doses of nutrients such as folate, B12, iodine, choline and other nutrients important during preconception and pregnancy, rather than simply looking for a long ingredient list. The prenatal shown here is EverNatal, which is intentionally formulated without iron so iron can be supplemented separately when required. When you’re preparing for pregnancy, your supplements shouldn’t just be whatever prenatal happened to be on the supermarket shelf. The formulation matters.
