@al_pachinohimselff: Public school schedules were built for a stay-at-home-parent economy that hasn’t existed in 50 years. Expecting 9-5 workers to magically manage 9:40 start times and random 2 PM early releases without losing their jobs is a logistical joke.
Hot take- school wasn’t designed for childcare. But to educate your children. School staff can’t work 10 hours a day so you can work 8.

Maybe instead of assuming she wants teachers to work 10-hour days, she’s saying jobs should start and finish within school hours or offer more flexibility for working parents.

The fact that the TEACHERS are in the comments having a lack of comprehension is CRAZY…. How are yall taking this as them saying teachers need to work longer, rather than taking it as jobs need to offer more flexibility with hours.

I think they are saying that jobs need to change how it works. Not that teachers need to stay longer 🤦🏻♀️it’s pointing out a flaw in the system with school and both parents working.

As a teacher I work 7-3:30. Are you expecting me to work a ten hour day so you can work 7?

The comments didn’t go the way i thought it would. I assumed they was saying jobs need to under this. Not make teachers work longer

Of schools were funded properly this would be my suggestion: have core classes in the morning. Then teachers go home and the next shift comes in. They teach art, music, PE, different languages, or elective type classes. Starting with kinder on up.

So that’s why school buses at afterschool programs exist. School is not babysitting

Daycare and before and after school programs exists for these problems. Plenty of people figure it out and have for over 50 years.

We used to walk to school and walk home. Or ride the bus. And be home alone

What school are y’all sending your kids too that starts at 9:40am and early dismissal is as late as 2pm? My daughter’s school has drop off at 7:45am and dismissal at 2:45pm and any early dismissal is 11:45am.

That is why you find child care or make arrangements for before and after. Expecting teachers to work 10 hour days to accommodate your schedule and essentially become a babysitter is diabolical!

This isn't a school problem. This is a corporate problem. People should have more flexibility.

What do you suggest? Teachers work longer hours?? We already work 10 hours a day and then some. The school should not cater to your work hours. People have been figuring it out for a very long time.

Actually school schedules were built around the schedules of farm families in the 1800s. That's why they have the summer off. So the kids could help bring in the crops.

Teachers talking about they already work 10 hours a day but they literally work only 40 weeks in the year. The post is not talking about child care. It is stating that parents can’t leave their jobs for the random late starts, early dismissals or mid day events without risking our own livelihood.

No one’s expecting teachers to work 10 hour days. The issue is inflation. The issue is that the rising costs to merely survive depends on a duel income with both sides working 40+ hours a week.

These comments are understanding the point “it’s not a babysitter” it honestly is lol it was made so both parents could start working, shortly after child labor was made. So yes, they made it so both parents could work and could give the govt taxes lol. But they also made school during a time moms still didn’t have rights to even work. So, yes let’s all wish we could make school hours during boomers times but make moms start working to see the facts guarantee they all say the same
