I cannot tell you how many comments I get on my posts about my tattoos being a sin. It’s actually crazy! I say now to my husband (despite regretting my tattoos for health reasons), I’m glad I have them. They help remind me to not get too prideful of my own personal convictions. Let me explain.. First, if someone has a personal conviction against tattoos, I respect that. Obey the Holy Spirit. But tattoos biblically are misunderstood when comparing our culture today and cultures past. In biblical times, tattoos were used in pagan worship to represent offering of oneself for evil deeds. In culture today they are a reflection of art and personal meaning. Given that context, isn’t it silly that anyone would press their personal convictions of tattoos on someone else? That someone would make them feel less than for having them or even call them a sin? But people do, and it’s not just this topic, it’s many many others. In fact, most of us probably have done this ourselves. Maybe it’s not tattoos, but it’s other things (social media use, holiday celebrations, music, exc..). The thing is, attacking or forcing upon someone your personal conviction is not only silly, but hurtful. Worse, it distracts from the gospel message entirely. Church, let’s keep the main thing the main thing. Be obedient to God in what he asks, but also staying humble in our walking out of that.
