8 THINGS THAT CAN MAKE STUDENTS LOSE RESPECT FOR A TEACHER . Respect in the classroom is not automatically guaranteed because you are the teacher. Your position gives you authority. But how you use that authority determines whether students genuinely respect you. Students are watching. They notice how you speak. How you respond when you're angry. Whether you keep your word. Whether you treat students fairly. And sometimes, without the teacher realizing it, respect starts disappearing. Here are 8 things that can cause it. . 📌 1. MAKING THREATS YOU NEVER CARRY OUT “I will send you out!” “I will report you!” “You will see what I will do!” Then nothing happens. Do it repeatedly and students eventually learn: “Teacher is only talking.” Don't make threats. Set consequences you can actually enforce, and follow through consistently. . 📌 2. COMING TO CLASS UNPREPARED You walk in without knowing exactly what you want to teach. The explanation is confusing. The lesson keeps going in different directions. Students may not say anything... But they notice. Preparation communicates competence. . 📌 3. SHOUTING ABOUT EVERYTHING A teacher who is always shouting may think: “At least they know I'm serious.” Not necessarily. When everything is shouted, nothing sounds serious anymore. Learn to use your voice strategically. Sometimes a calm voice carries more authority than a loud one. . 📌 4. SHOWING FAVOURITISM One student can do almost anything. Another student gets punished for the same thing. You may think nobody notices. They notice. And once students begin to believe that your decisions are based on favourites... trust starts disappearing. . 📌 5. HUMILIATING STUDENTS Correction is part of teaching. Humiliation is not. Don't use a student's mistake to entertain the class. Don't insult their intelligence. Don't embarrass them because you are angry. You can correct a student firmly without destroying their dignity. . 📌 6. NOT FOLLOWING YOUR OWN RULES “Don't come late.” But you regularly come late. “Keep your phone away.” But you are constantly on yours. “Respect others.” But you insult students when you're angry. Students listen to instructions... But they also watch behaviour. Your example is part of your teaching. . 📌 7. TALKING WITHOUT ACTUALLY TEACHING You have talked for 40 minutes. The students have copied plenty of notes. But ask them: “So, what did you learn?” Silence. Being busy in front of the class is not the same as teaching. If students consistently leave your lessons confused, bored or disconnected, they will eventually question your effectiveness. . 📌 8. BECOMING TOO FAMILIAR Being friendly with students is good. But there is a line. When there are no boundaries... When students speak to you anyhow... When every lesson becomes jokes and gist... When students feel they can negotiate every instruction... The teacher-student relationship can lose its professional structure. You can be warm without becoming overly familiar. . HERE'S THE THING... Students may never walk up to you and say: “Sir, we are losing respect for you.” They simply start behaving differently. They stop listening. They stop taking instructions seriously. They challenge everything. They ignore your warnings. They become less responsive. And sometimes, the teacher doesn't realize that the change started with their own repeated behaviour. Respect is not built by shouting: “I am your teacher!” . It is built through: Consistency. Competence. Fairness. Self-control. Clear boundaries. And keeping your word.
