@dogtorjessica: That student was right: two or three times was two or three times too many. Personal safety isn’t paranoia, and setting boundaries doesn’t mean living in fear. It means trusting your instincts, preparing wisely and remembering that no emergency is worth putting yourself in an unsafe situation. ❤️ #womeninag #veterinarian #farmlife #prevet #vetstudent

I feel way less guilty about not doing after hours emergencies for non clients now that I know others have that boundary.

This is so important to talk about, it has been in my mind lately and I wanted to ask the same question to someone who take emergencies or even just go to vaccinate at peoples houses, it’s so frustrating to think that vets can’t go to save a life for the fear of owners 😣

Thankfully, our clinic policy is everyone hauls to us for after hours emergencies, but it can definitely still be an issue, and I try to stay aware of that. Any late night call my husband comes with me.

I've lived in this country for over 50 years, traveled most of the world and have finally broken through the illusion, this is actually one of the worst countries on the planet.

I’m impressed that this is something those just getting started on their journey are conscious enough to ask questions about.

I honestly didn’t even think about this… my horse had an accident in the paddock and one of the vets from where I take my horses came to my property at 7pm at night - pitch black and working under a torch. Ofc I’m a regular there and they know me and my horses very well (even did some of my vet nursing hours there) but I didn’t even think about the fact some people might make their vets feel unsafe 😳 I’m so grateful for veterinarians and vet staff

Great message! I feel for the non clients because they need help as well, so maybe a male assistant could b a possibility. Last time I had the vet at my place she brought 4 assistants but it was a training exercise for graduating vets.

In my country a vet that also worked for the food agency and was known for being strict was asked to come help with the birth of a lamb (it was 8 pm) by someone. Almost there, he saw a car standing still on the side of the road and decided to get out. That someone was ordered to kill him to get rid of the difficult guy who didn't let anything shady in the food industry go unnoticed. He got shot, he tried to escape but he landed in a ditch and they shot him through the head.

In my state, ag Extension agents go through self defense training. Women make up over half of our ag agents at this point and a lot of us have stories. 🥺

My first job (20 years ago) we took call for our clinic. I would meet clients (essentially strangers!) at the clinic alone, after hours. Thinking back it was crazy. I’m fortunate no one attempted anything.

I also don’t do non client emergencies anymore. The last one I added on, I told myself it was less than 5 min away from my current call and I was already out. Pulled into a place soooo sketchy and got a flat tire from a bone in the driveway that sliced my tire. Completely flat within a few minutes. Thankfully everything ended up fine, but no one wants to be under their vehicle at a place that they don’t feel comfortable. Literally universe telling me to keep them damn boundaries 😳

My brother-in-law is a rural large animal vet in Ohio. Started his own practice with a colleague after leaving a multi facility practice that was sold to a large corporation. They decided from the start not to perform emergencies for non clients. I complete understand why but also firmly believe it is from non client emergencies they did at the other practice. The worst part is people who criticize them for it but yet it is no different then what human doctors do.

We always have a RVT with the vet on house calls or farm calls even for clinic after hour calls. Never alone! Gotta stay safe out there

Happens in small animal too. I saw a news story about a guy getting shot during a dr*g deal and I recognized his name as a client. A few months later, he called me at 2:00am for a c-section for his dog. I had my office manager, who was tough as nails, come in with me for that one.
