You have to wonder who in these retailers thinks it’s okay to display these big signs saying “local produce and supporting Irish producers” over the fruit section when there is rarely Irish produce in this section! It says “Supporting Irish Producers” directly above the South African oranges and grapefruits which just doesn’t make any sense 🤦‍♀️ It’s the same above the apples when most of the apples in Lidl at the moment are from Italy and South Africa. Thankfully I did find some Irish apples in Lidl — which is at least a step forward compared to Aldi, where I couldn’t find any. But given that it’s apple season right now, we should be seeing far more Irish apples on shelves, not just a token few. If supermarkets want to advertise with big signs that they’re supporting Irish, then they need to actually do it in a meaningful way. I really believe as consumers we can help — by asking for Irish produce in our numbers, we can show retailers that this is what we want on shelves. Less misleading signage, more genuine support for Irish growers — that’s the change we need to see 🍏🇮🇪 #sophiesswaps #supportlocal #cleverswaps
