#aot | the rumbling I think this is one of the most important quotes within aot for a number of reasons. of course, within the context, gabi is coming to the realisation that everything she had been taught since she was born about paradis was a lie, and starts to starts to separate her from the propaganda she has been taught and opens herself to a more open mindset. however, I think the most important part is actually the second part of the quote “just people. people like us.” because it doesn’t absolve anyone of their guilt or the bad acts they have committed in the name of their home. in fact it actually fleshes out everyone and makes them more human. the term “devils” was used to dehumanise the people of paradis and consider them an entirely different race. to make the eldians that do live in Marley feel guilty for what they are and show they’ll always been considered different to actual Marley residents, which they use against them to get them to do what they want. but coming to terms with the devils of paradis actually being people, as gabi says, just makes them human. they’re are still “good” or “bad” humans, selfish or selfless, kind or mean. murderer or victim. accepting people of paradis as humans isn’t absolving them of what they’ve done, but rather seeing their acts with empathy and the approach to understand them. which is what makes humans - human. of course gabi is one person of millions of people that were scared of eldians and paradis, so while her development shows that there is a chance to find peace with other nations and people, we see that it was just too late. eren is similar with gabi. unlike gabi who is manipulated to believe that the people of paradis are evil, eren actually creates his own idea of the outside world purely on his own beliefs. he becomes so focused on beating all titans so that everyone can be safe (at the beginning) and live outside the walls comfortably, and then comes to the ocean to create only more ideas of what could be beyond it, that he in his own way also dehumanises the people beyond the sea. not in the way that gabi does, but in the way that he forms his own expectation of them that when he actually meets them, he is disappointed. his goal is always to have absolute freedom, which is why he fights titans and goes beyond the walls, and eventually beyond the sea. but that is where the problem lies, where is freedom? at one point is one free? who is to that had eren survived the rumbling and succeeeded, that he wouldn’t have found something else to restrict himself with and deem that he needed to free himself from? we even see this ideology with something as small as when he believes mikasa is worrying and caring too much about him at the beginning and wants to prove he doesn’t need her to take care of him. even in these small moment, he is still reaching for a kind of freedom. anyway that is enough from me, sorry for rambling :D #erenyeager #gabi #aotedit
