The Black Prince’s Ruby is one of the most famous gemstones in the world. It has been part of the British Crown Jewels for over 650 years, passing through the hands of kings, queens, and conquerors since the 14th century. And for most of that time, nobody knew exactly what it was. The stone entered recorded history when it was taken from Abu Said, the Moorish Prince of Granada, and eventually gifted to Edward of Woodstock, the Black Prince of England, in 1367. From that moment it never left the British monarchy. In 1415 Henry V wore it embedded in his battle helmet at the Battle of Agincourt, one of the most decisive battles in English history. In the heat of combat a French Duke struck Henry directly in the head with a battleaxe. Henry survived. So did the stone. It was not until 1783 that gemologists finally had the tools to examine it closely enough to discover the truth. The Black Prince’s Ruby is not a ruby at all. It is a 170 carat red spinel, a completely different mineral that had been mistaken for ruby for over 400 years. It earned a nickname that has followed it ever since. The Great Imposter. Here is the twist. Fine red spinel is actually rarer than ruby in nature. It just never got the same recognition because for centuries everyone thought they were looking at a ruby. The Crown Jewels of England may have accidentally been sitting on something even more extraordinary than they realized. 💎
