Hi all! Throwback to my last red carpet ✨ @FestivaldeCannes #cannesfilmfestival
I’m 9 days postpartum and last night I hit the point where everything felt so ridiculous that I genuinely didn’t know whether I wanted to laugh or cry. It was somewhere around 3am. My baby had been nursing forever. And when I say forever, I mean I had been sitting in basically the same position for almost three hours. My back hurt. My neck hurt. One boob had apparently become his permanent residence. I was thirsty, but my water was sitting JUST far enough away that reaching for it felt impossible without waking him up and starting the entire process over again. 😭 My husband was asleep. The house was completely quiet. And I remember looking down at this tiny person attached to me thinking: I love you more than anything in the entire world. But PLEASE release me. 😂 That’s such a weird thing about the first couple weeks postpartum. Two things can be true at exactly the same time. You can be completely obsessed with your baby… and also desperately want your body back for five minutes. You can feel unbelievably grateful… and unbelievably overwhelmed. You can stare at their tiny face and think you’ve never seen anything more perfect… while simultaneously wondering how it’s humanly possible that you’re feeding them AGAIN. I opened this app because I needed somewhere to say it where nobody was going to give me advice. I typed something like: “9 days pp. my baby has been breastfeeding for three hours. 8:02. he’s screaming and so am i” Dramatic? Maybe. 😂 Accurate at that exact moment? Absolutely. Then a mom from Switzerland replied. She said: “My mom said the same thing. Then my aunt told me she thinks she got 2 weeks in and cried at it. They forget… or they lie lol ur not failing ❤️” I LOST IT. Like actual laughing. At 3-something in the morning. Trying not to move my chest because there was finally a sleepy baby attached to it. Because YES. Why does every older woman remember postpartum like it was some peaceful little montage?? “Oh, he slept through the night almost immediately.” “I never had trouble breastfeeding.” “You babies were always such good sleepers.” Ma’am. Respectfully. There is absolutely no way. 😂 And maybe they really don’t remember. Maybe your brain eventually edits out the hours sitting half naked in the dark wondering why a newborn needs to eat AGAIN when they literally just finished. Maybe that’s how humanity survives. But hearing another mom say it made me feel so much better. Not because she fixed anything. My baby was still attached to me. I was still exhausted. It was still the middle of the night. But suddenly the whole thing felt less heavy. Then she sent me a hug through the app. A mom in Switzerland. I’m sitting in my house, nine days into motherhood, milk leaking through my shirt, running on tiny pieces of sleep… and some woman on the other side of the world basically reached through my phone and said: you’re doing okay. There’s something so strange and beautiful about that. Because postpartum can feel incredibly isolating even when you’re surrounded by people. Everyone wants to see the baby. Everyone asks how the baby is sleeping. Everyone has advice. But sometimes you don’t need another tip. You don’t need someone to tell you to “enjoy every second.” You just need another mom who’s currently in it, or remembers being in it, to say: Yep. This is hard. You’re not failing. Eventually he finally unlatched. I looked down at him completely milk drunk and asleep like he hadn’t just held me hostage for half the night. 😂 And somehow I wasn’t as frustrated anymore. I was still exhausted. Still sore. Still very ready to sleep. But I wasn’t sitting there thinking I was doing something wrong. Sometimes the thing that gets you through the hardest nights isn’t an answer. It’s finding someone who understands why you’re laughing and crying at the exact same time. Even if she’s 4,000 miles away. 🥹💛 #mom #baby #MomsofTikTok #momtok #momlife
A message to men in general. If it doesn’t apply to you, GOOD, it shouldn’t. Unfortunately, it will apply to many of you. #cornell #news #leftist #metoo #womensrights
