In the early 2010s, Skepta was chasing the mainstream with a watered down sound. After a disappointing public response, the mixtape Blacklisted marked the start of a creative reset, pushing him to strip everything back and refocus on making music that “me and the mandem listen to in the whip.” He reached back to the classic sounds of grime, studied how records like German Whip were breaking into international spaces, then dropped That's Not Me with his brother JME. The video, shot by Tim & Barry on an £80 budget, won Best Video at the 2014 MOBOs. The message was clear: grime didn't need to compromise, it could set the terms itself. The album was built over three years, through delays and relentless reworking. Skepta produced nearly the entire album himself, and his intention was simple: "I want anybody from around the world to be able to listen to the album and know it comes from London." No label interference, released independently through BBK. And while the album was being made, Skepta was flipping the culture around him in real time. He stood alongside Kanye West at a headline grabbing Brit Awards 2015 performance. Drake brought him out at Wireless Festival, then got BBK tattooed on his shoulder. After releasing “Shutdown,” Skepta staged an illegal show in Shoreditch that felt less like a gig and more like a statement that was impossible to ignore. Grime was moving like punk once did, building momentum without waiting for approval, pushing itself into the global spaces it wasn’t invited to. Skepta treated it like a restart, touching down in places like the US and performing in basketball courts like a newcomer, even as the world was starting to catch up. The title Konnichiwa had been in place since 2013, rooted in Skepta’s respect for Japanese culture. But by the time the album landed, it meant more. It played like both a greeting and a declaration to the rest of the world: UK music is here. The postage stamp on the artwork sealed it. He was packaging and posting the uncut sounds of the UK to every corner of the planet, positioning himself - and grime - as the real British royalty #skepta #konnichiwa #ukgrime #ukrap
