as someone in tech hiring, when i hear someone has a homelab, they immediately get shortlisted. it shows a clear interest and capability in managing tech at a much more hands-on level. the best way to learn something is to break it and have to figure out how to fix it

What the dev sees: "redundancy is key!". What the family sees: "is his special interest, better not to touch it".

Big tip for backing up on a thumb drive… plug it in to something every 6mo or so. That storage tech needs electricity to hold the memory in place for long periods of time

The issue for me is that I know enough to know that I need more backups and I would LOVE to have a local network, but I don’t know enough to set it up or manage it myself. That means I’m stuck paying for someone to set it up and that’s going to run me more than I can afford :/

Just a heads up to people: TVs are increasingly hardcoding their DNS servers so without a DNAT rule forcing the TV to the pihole it may not route the requests there. Some might be better off completely isolating the TV because maintaining an allowlist is a pain and they could be using encrypted DNS

It’s even worse. I had Google drive sync and having some kind of error and suddenly all my photos on my phone were gone. It just deleted them off my phone without my consent.

No matter where your data is, backup math is always the same: 2 is 1, 1 is none.

While I agree with all of this, hard drive prices and online backup services just getting MORE and MORE pricey 😅

Yes, completely agree! After 30 years in IT I know Murphy’s law :) Let me suggest that you do some posts about Project Nomad and local LLM’s - both are really valuable to know

I don't have enough space to store my stuff locally. I've had 2 external hard drives fail on me, is there an affordable way to backup?

Are you sticking with Portainer after all their changes in 3.x? I've been meaning to block off some time to research alternatives.
