I’m writing this for those who may not know about Khmer–Thai culture, so they can understand that the cultures of these two countries share similarities — but they are NOT the same. You know what? Many overly nationalistic Thai people often claim that Cambodia copied Thai culture and simply made it its own. However, they rarely provide complete evidence to support the accusation that Cambodia copied their culture. At the same time, the roots of Thai culture have also been influenced by Cambodian culture. And whenever this topic comes up, some people argue, “But Cambodia was also influenced by India.” Yes, of course Cambodia was influenced by India in various ways. But cultural influence does not automatically mean copying. Cambodia developed and adapted those influences into its own distinct cultural traditions rather than simply taking another culture and claiming it as its own.
