The story of Basquiat and music is equally a part of the story to me as his success as an artist in general but is so much less known. Today we dive in. In 1979, Wall Street banker Michael Holman happened upon an article in a magazine called the Village Voice on the Fab Five graffiti crew, featuring an ad from the crew that offered their graffiti services for your home or business. Holman contacted the crew, and eventually struck up a friendship with him. Freddy and Holman concocted the idea for a party, one that would confront the more elitist downtown art scene with the emerging street art scenes spawning from areas like Harlem and New York, with wealthy socialites greeted by walls covered ceiling to floor in burners and pieces. Holman would meet a young Jean-Michel Basquiat just before the party, offering up his own artistic services and revealing himself to be the anonymous graffiti writer known as “SAMO”. After an interview between them, Basquiat would ask Holman if he wanted to start a band, to which he agreed. They, along with friends Shannon Dawson and Wayne Clifford, would establish the original lineup of Gray (though Dawson would quickly be replaced by Nick Taylor). The sound of Gray was unorthodox to say the least. Though the group was inspired by legendary composers like John Cage and Henry Mancini, the group had little to no experience with the instruments that were being played, which included the clarinet, a keyboard, a guitar played with a metal file, and a wasp synthesizer. According to Basquiat, Gray was “music that isn’t really music. We were trying to be incomplete, abrasive, oddly beautiful.” Though the musical style was unconventional, it fit perfectly into the underground alternative music scene in New York, where they would perform at now-iconic clubs. Unfortunately, by 1982, Basquiat’s art had exploded in notoriety, and he left Gray in order to give his attention solely to that, with the group disintegrating soon after.
