The concept that science explains the "how" while the Bible explains the "why" is a framework used to show how scientific discovery and religious faith can complement each other rather than contradict. This perspective, often called "complementarity," argues that science and scripture are simply asking two entirely different types of questions about the exact same reality. Science is focused on the physical mechanisms, processes, and laws of nature. When science looks at the universe, it asks questions like: How did the universe expand? How do species evolve? How does gravity hold planets in orbit? It relies on observation, empirical data, and repeatable experiments to map out the mechanical steps of the natural world. It tells us the physical story of the cosmos. The Bible, on the other hand, is a collection of ancient theological and spiritual texts focused on ultimate meaning, purpose, and relationship. It does not contain modern scientific formulas or laboratory breakdowns because it was written to address questions of the heart and soul: Why is there something rather than nothing? Why does human life have value? What is our moral purpose? Instead of providing a technical blueprint for the universe, it uses narrative, poetry, and ancient cultural frameworks to assert that the universe is intentional, loved, and created for a purpose by God. A classic analogy for this is a boiling kettle of water. If you ask a scientist why the water is boiling, they will explain the how: heat is transferring from the stove, causing water molecules to move rapidly and turn into steam. This explanation is completely true. However, if you ask the person who turned on the stove, they will explain the why: "I want to make a cup of tea for my friend." This explanation is also completely true. One answer does not disprove the other. Instead, the physical mechanism (the how) and the personal intention (the why) work together to give you a full, complete understanding of the situation. By viewing the relationship this way, many people find that they do not have to choose between modern science and their faith.
