I don’t know if this makes any sense, but I believe this was the whole point. The author perhaps wanted to show how unfair war really is, the people who survive and live long happy lives can be awful people who never faced any consequences for their actions, while the actual victims or the people who fight with everything they have sometimes die and are remembered for nothing but being cruel. It’s a harsh reality of war and only seeing/hearing one side.

I think the entire point of the series is that nobody was innocent.. everyone did wrong. I mean, if we’re being real here, the most loyal was Levi.. and he got a worse ending than Floch and Eren combined. Could you imagine going through all that and then having to mourn everyone you know for the rest of your life? Eren & Floch got an easy out.

Bro, please do me a favor, go rewatch the whole thing and let me know how many times the term "Cruel world" is used, just because you stand for good or think you stand for good, don't mean you are gonna get rewarded in the end, and in the same stance, it's not because you do evil things or think you are doing evil, that you will eventually get a bad ending, Long story short, life don't give a shit and if you are unfortunate enough to fall on its radar, even being Mary poppins won't save you.
