@thecasualceo: Rent vs Buy: Which Makes You Richer After 20 Years? | The Math Behind Buying vs Renting Should you buy a house or keep renting and invest the difference? Ryan and Steve are both 32, earn the same salary, live in the same city, and have $80,000 saved. Ryan uses his savings to buy a $350,000 home. Steve keeps renting and invests his money instead. Twenty years later, who has more wealth? Renting vs buying a Home - the real Math In this video, we break down the rent vs buy decision using real numbers, including: 🏠 Home appreciation 💰 Mortgage payments 📈 Stock market investing 🏦 Compound growth 💵 Home equity 🏘️ Rent increases 🧾 Property taxes 🔧 Home maintenance and repairs 📊 The price-to-rent ratio 💧 Liquidity and diversification ⏳ The long-term impact of 20–30 years of compounding You’ll see why comparing rent to a mortgage payment alone can give you the wrong answer—and why buying isn’t automatically better than renting. Buying a home gives you leverage, stability, and eventually an asset you can own outright. Renting can give you flexibility, liquidity, and the ability to invest your savings and monthly difference. But there’s a catch: Renting only works financially if you actually invest the money you save. And buying only works financially if the home price, mortgage rate, appreciation, taxes, maintenance, and length of stay make sense for your situation. We’ll also look at the price-to-rent ratio and explain why the same rent-vs-buy decision can produce completely different results depending on where you live. So what would you choose? Would you rather own the house—or own the investment portfolio? Steve's rent never grows in 20 years? Steve won't need a bigger house when he starts a new family?

Yeah but how many times did Steve have to move to another place. Ryan should pay extra money on his mortgage then he would be mortgage free in 20 years.

People, you cannot "own" a house in the states, just see what happens if you don't pay your property tax, It's a glorified lease from the government

Too many variables ignored here, but the most important is Steve can move with his Job anywhere while Ryan is stuck in his city forever.

a 350k house won't be the same after 10/20/30 years every year the price goes up so as inflation after 30 years one has already owned a house while another can only spend his entire money to buy a normal house and by that time he would be 50-60 how much longer can he work to build back his savings?

This is a biased opinion, 3% growth in real-estate is a little low unless he’s in the wilderness, and as a average based on history and stats return on investments in the stock market over that period is closer to 6-7%, but this does get the average person to think
