@sorensuorin: I took an overnight sleeper train from Chişinău, Moldova to Bucharest, Romania. The train still uses Soviet-era railway infrastructure, including sleeping cabins and Moldova’s wider railway gauge. When we reached the Romanian border, the entire train had to be lifted so the wheels underneath the carriages could be changed to fit the European railway gauge. The journey took around 16 hours, including a thorough border inspection, before we finally arrived in Romania. It was an interesting way to travel from a former Soviet republic into the European Union, and a pretty incredible way to experience the history of this region.
