🐴💉 What’s Going On With That Capped Hock? That big, squishy swelling over the point of a horse’s hock is called a capped hock — and while it can look alarming, it’s often caused by trauma or repeated pressure to the area. A capped hock occurs when the subcutaneous bursa over the point of the hock becomes inflamed and fills with fluid, commonly after a horse kicks a wall, lies down against a hard surface, or repeatedly puts pressure on the area. In this case, the vet treated the affected area by draining the accumulated fluid, then flushing the space with sterile water and an antibiotic. After the area was thoroughly flushed, it was injected with a steroid and an antibiotic. 🩺 Why treat it? Besides the obvious swelling, a capped hock can become chronically inflamed, infected, or develop into a persistent fluid-filled pocket if the underlying problem isn’t addressed. ⚠️ One important thing: A capped hock is usually more of a cosmetic issue than a lameness issue, but if the swelling is hot, painful, rapidly increasing, draining, or accompanied by fever or lameness, veterinary evaluation is important. 👀 Horse owner tip: Prevention starts with identifying what’s causing the repeated trauma — whether that’s kicking, stall design, bedding, or where your horse prefers to lie down. Big bump ≠ just a bump! 🐴🩺 Sometimes there’s a whole lot going on underneath the surface. #foryoupage #equinevetmed #sportsmedicine #equinevet #statesvilleequineclinic
