POV: YOU ARE IN ATHENS IN 430 BC In 430 BC, Athens was not a quiet marble ruin. It was crowded, hot, frightened, and at war. During the Peloponnesian War, Athens followed Pericles’ strategy: people from the countryside were brought behind the city’s defenses and the Long Walls that connected Athens to its port at Piraeus. The idea was to avoid a land battle with Sparta and rely on Athenian sea power. But the packed city became the perfect place for disaster. A terrible plague broke out in the second year of the war. Ancient writer Thucydides lived through it and described the city collapsing under fear, overcrowding, sickness, and mass death. Families were crammed into temporary shelters. Funeral customs broke down. Doctors could not stop it. People argued over whether the gods had abandoned them. Even Pericles, the most powerful political figure in Athens, died during the epidemic. We still do not know exactly what the disease was. Historians have suggested typhus, typhoid fever, smallpox, measles, Ebola-like illness, or something else entirely. What we do know is that the plague changed Athens forever. This was the same city that built the Parthenon, developed radical democracy, staged tragedies, debated philosophy, and commanded an empire. And then, inside its own walls, it started to fall apart. #History #athens #greece #greekhistory
