@k.choir.iowa.gal: On 9/11 my students asked about where I was and I shared my story. As teachers, we have the unique opportunity to share not only what happened on September 11, 2001, but where we were, what we remember, and how that day changed the world we live in. For many of our students, 9/11 is something they’ve only ever known as a date in history. They weren’t here to feel the uncertainty, hear the questions, or experience the way our communities came together. Sharing our stories reminds students that history is made up of real people, real emotions, and memories that stay with us. And sometimes, the most meaningful lessons aren’t the ones we find in a textbook. They’re the ones we pass down through our own stories. #teacher #teachersoftiktok #september11 #worldtradecenter #choirteacher

I think the hardest thing to explain to kids born after 9/11, because they have only ever known a world at war, is how dumbfounded we were that it was happening. The mere idea that this could happened hadn’t been thought of by the average person. It was like we were discovering atrocity for the first time for most people.

I am wondering how I am going to teach 9/11 to students (going for middle or hs social studies) as someone who was born post 9/11 and these stories help me understand what people actually went through not just what we were taught in class. Thank you for sharing

Hearing these perspectives every year is so important, and I think the most surreal part of it all is hearing "I remember clearly" from every single story.

I was a senior in high school on our class field trip to Washington DC and New York City. We flew into DC on the 10th and had the chance to visit the National Mall and the Smithsonian. On Tuesday morning we were going to visit the Capitol Building and then drive to NYC later that afternoon. We were on sitting on the bus when one of the chaperones received a phone call from our principal saying that we were under attack and needed to come home immediately. I remember looking out the window and seeing people running down the stairs out of department buildings fearing for their lives. As we were driving back to the hotel to gather our belongings, we could look over the Potomac River and see the smoke billowing out of the Pentagon. We drove 10+ hours back home where our parents were waiting for us in the school parking lot at 2:00 in the morning.

I was in 9th grade, history class of all places, when the announcement happened. My father saw the second plane hit from his office down there. He came home covered in soot and ash.

I’m one of the last generations to remember 9/11. On that day every year in school, we’d talk about what we could all remember. I remember my history teacher my 8th grade year going “this will be the last time I can do this before I have to teach it.”

Everything happened so fast, I was in high school and that morning is ingrained in my head. The following 2 weeks was life changing for me.

The most profound thought I had the other day when talking to my children about this was I cannot for the life of me remember things I did minutes ago like 85% of the time. But this moment? 25 years ago? I can tell you exactly what I was doing, what the living room looked and smelled like, what my breakfast was since it was before I left for school. It’s surreal the way it impacts our memories so precisely.

Did you guys watch Come From Away? I think that’s it on the tv. I have made it my own tradition to watch it on the anniversary every year it’s a difficult watch at times, but I think really shows the beauty in humanity and kindness when tragedy happens.

You described the day and its uncertainty so well and the recommendation for them to ask their parents and grandparent is much more impactful than some may realize. We need kids to talk to their parents and get curious about the past and life before cell phones. Thanks for all you do!

I was mad that they didn’t show the usual cartoons at 6pm on television. we didn’t have Nickelodeon, Disney or something like that, it was only 1 hour cartoons in the morning and in the evening, so I was mad at the news, not really understanding what was happening. (I’m not from America)

I asked to watch SpongeBob, my dad had been watching the news the night before. When we turned on the tv it was still on the news channel. The second plane hit before my mom could change the channel. I turned 3 a week later.

I wasn't born at the time, however I always ask my mom whether she saw it as we are British and have different time zones, she told me she was at work in an office at around 11:00 to 11:30am and saw it on the news, she always tells me how she remembers her co worker crying hysterically as her coworkers parents were in New York on vacation, everyone in her office got sent home from work, she said at that moment the world changed forever globally. She told me most British people thought the Uk would be next to get attacked, 4 years later the 7/7 bombings happened in London which was heavily influenced by 9/11. Thank you for sharing your story.

I remember being in class I was in 1st grade. After the second plane hit. My dad picked me up early because my aunt called my dad and said my cousin called her and said the plane was hi-jacked and she loves her and to apologize to me because she won’t be making it to my birthday party and that she loves me and our family and it was the last time my aunt hear from her. My cousin was on her way to California to celebrate my 7th birthday with me. My birthday is 9/14. So she was coming out early to spend time with the family. She was my dad cousin. I didn’t get to really know her either.

I was 3. It was my first day of preschool, I do not remember any of it but my mom said that her and the other parents did drop off and then went upstairs for what was supposed to be some kind of orientation but they just watched the news.
