Masking is like having daily pain but pretend you don’t feel anything to not make anyone mad about it but you still don’t understand why your pain is their problem but for some reason it is so you don’t have a choice otherwise they’ll hurt you without any mercy

I think it’s even worse than you describe. If I would describe masking to a neurotypical I would say it’s like every time you talked to someone they would grab your boobs and you would have to pretend that you’re completely ok with that.

Don't forget fake enthusiasm. That's probably the most demanding one for me personally.

This is why I am anonymous online, just existing is so exhausting because I spend all day acting. I can’t also do it in my spare time.

Masking is pretending the fluorescent lights in your office don’t bother you and you love how noisy and bright they are.

I saw a comment on another creators post about this topic: it’s like being in a job interview, but all the time.

Masking for me is pretending to be someone else's definition of "normal" so that I won't be the bullied, ostracized, weird kid in school

Pretending to have an entirely different nervous system. The allistic masking is mainly concerned with rolls/hats. They apply the social rules that go with this situation. Then they apply social rules/behavior of that situation. Etc. Yeah, high masking autistics ALSO have to do that, without the social mapping. On top of that, we pretend to have a different nervous system. We are not the same.

my coworker asked me if I secretly hated her because when we were talking face to face, I was smiling and laughing and holding a conversation and as soon as I turned around, I dropped my face back to default which reads as RBF and she caught my reflection. i told her no, I don't hate you. that's just my face when I'm not interacting with people. she was like oh ... glad to hear that but that's kinda creepy.

I was diagnosed with adhd at 21 Yes masking has helped me function while interacting social because i spent all that time masking and learning how to interact "the correct way", but because of that im struggling with really bad emotion disregulation after my diagnosis

And let's not forget that each mask is a different personality and set of likes and dislikes.

she doesn’t even realise that when she says “masking” she’s talking about the way it is done neurotypically.

I wish they knew how many things I’m thinking about during a single conversation with someone. Eye contact, trying not to have closed off body language, voice volume, facial expressions, the cadence of my voice, not interrupting, asking questions, active listening etc. All these things run through my mind literally simultaneously and by the end of the day, I am so exhausted and burnt out I can’t even talk to my family who I live with. I’ve gotten better at it and it’s made my social life a little better but at the cost of my mental health. Socializing is so unnatural to me the same way my autistic traits like memorizing long strings of numbers and recognizing patterns may be unnatural to a neurotypical.
