Talk about making the most of a salary! Our friend here is really crushing it on a $53k salary especially in CA! One additional note that I thought was worth calling out: She got a full scholarship for college and her job paid for her Master’s degree. She has a used car that she bought years ago. Honestly, I am not sure I’d change anything about what she’s spending. She’s got a really great grasp on it. I’m impressed she has the rent she does and that she keeps her groceries so low! I think she could even add in a little charity of $50 or so each month! I’m not totally sure if she has $29k in cash savings for a reason other than an Emergency Fund (perhaps she’s saving for a down payment? Vacations? Gifts?). Otherwise I’d say she could probably lower that a bit even. We get to invest now. She said she has been investing $500/month into her Roth IRA, so of the $850 from the librarian job, let’s keep doing that + add another $50 since the limit was recently raised. I’d honestly probably bump up the 401k contribution a bit too - maybe another $200 month? That leaves you with $100 extra each month as I’m sure it’d make you nervous to have $0 leftover. For that, I’d just start piling the rest of my money into a brokerage account! Literally that’s it! Probably a less exciting one because she is doing incredible, but I just had to share this salary, budget, career - all of it - in a place like CA!
