@thssemen: #thesummerhikarudied Yoshiki Tsujinaka and Hikaru Indo are two teenagers and childhood friends living in a small Japanese village called Kubitachi. Despite their contrasting personalities and different hobbies, they maintain a close friendship. However, one January day, Hikaru is mortally wounded while hiking alone in the mountains. Before he dies, a mysterious supernatural entity enters his body, healing the wound and reshaping his organism to suit itself. The new "Hikaru" possesses all the senses and memories of the original but is a separate being, which Yoshiki notices immediately. Yoshiki still wants to be friends with "Hikaru," but their relationship is under constant threat due to the mountain spirit's different perception and moral values, as well as the demon hunters who are looking for it. The author, Mokumokuren, conceived the series while preparing for high school entrance exams. After graduating, in January 2021, Mokumokuren began posting drawings on Twitter in his spare time. Later, the editorial staff of Young Ace Up approached the author with a proposal to publish the manga on their website. Mokumokuren is a fan of action manga from Weekly Shōnen Jump and Weekly Young Jump, especially "Tokyo Ghoul". When writing the plot, the author tries to keep the horror to a minimum, appealing to people's emotions rather than simply scaring them. He also believes that the plot's theme heightens the horror, building on the suspension bridge effect, which states that it is easier to fall in love when feeling anxiety or fear. In the artwork, Mokumokuren tries to use rarely seen onomatopoeia, but takes care to ensure they fit correctly into the story's context. Mokumokuren originally pitched the manga "The Summer Hikaru Died" in 2021 as a BL (Boys' Love) story. Later, he described the manga as a "coming-of-age horror" with "queer themes". Inspiration Mokumokuren used his grandmother's hometown as a model, where houses stood close to each other, and neighbors could freely come and go without permission. The inspiration came to him during a trip to that region. Since he wanted the characters to speak a specific dialect, he chose a dialect "slightly different from Kansai," and picked the "mountainous area of the Tōkai region" as the setting. As a result, the story is set in a fictional rural town nestled between mountains in Mie Prefecture, and some characters speak the Mie dialect. The idea for the manga came to the author during exam preparation, after which he started posting drawings on Twitter, leading the editorial team of Young Ace Up to approach him about publishing the manga on their website. The anime series adaptation, produced by CygamesPictures, premiered on July 6, 2025. Following the release of the first volume, the manga achieved both commercial and critical success, selling 200,000 copies in three months, while the series itself received rave reviews from critics for its plot, artwork, and characters. By July 4, 2025, the manga had 3.5 million copies in circulation. #on #xyzbca #fyp #hikaru
