i studied abroad in belgium for a semester because i wanted to learn french but in high schools they also have dutch as a mandatory foreign language. i decided to take dutch anyway (i barely spoke french which meant that i often had to learn words in both languages) and somehow i passed the final exam (many of my belgian classmates didn’t)
