Paul is saying that if you can serve God, alone, without a partner, and you won't fall into sexual sins or vices, then that's the best path. However, if you cannot do that, then you need a spouse to fulfill your sexual urges in a holy way.

God saw a man, and he was lone, so he created him a companion So there is no history backing Paul's position to this writing. But see the shear size of God's desire. Why would you opt to be single instead of finding a good wife and live under the provision of God

Amos 3:3 completes what Paul was saying. If you and your spouse have the same goal and destination and its rooted in Christ, then marriage is would be suitable. Go before the Lord, above all else for guidance.
