Prime Minister Mark Carney has condemned a gathering of masked individuals on Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc land, calling it a “disgusting display of hate.” A group of masked people dressed in black was photographed on the First Nation’s reserve near the former Kamloops Indian Residential School on Sunday, Sept. 27. Images circulating online appeared to show some individuals carrying flags and wearing clothing with logos associated with Second Sons Canada, a group described by the Canadian Anti-Hate Network as a white nationalist “Active Club.” Later on Sunday, individuals appearing to be part of the same group were photographed at the Pacific Way overpass holding a banner that read, “Got bones?” Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc Chief Rosanne Casimir said the presence of individuals associated with Second Sons Canada was “deeply concerning” and that the Nation was working with the RCMP while considering additional security measures ahead of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on Sept. 30. Carney said the incident was “abhorrent” and that it had “no place in this country.” He also expressed support for people who were shaken or hurt by the display. “This week, we will mark the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation,” Carney said. He pointed to the responsibility of Canadians to confront the legacy of the residential school system and its continuing effects. The Kamloops RCMP is investigating the gathering. Police received a report shortly after 7:30 a.m. Sunday about a large group dressed in black and wearing white masks near Chief Eli Larue Way, according to local reporting. The incident occurred three days before the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, which is observed annually on Sept. 30.
