A Soviet party boss who, when the USSR collapsed in 1991, didn't just seize Turkmenistan — he became it. President. Then president for life. Every channel, every schoolbook, every wall: one face. But the worship had a price. And ordinary people paid it. In 2005, he shut every hospital outside the capital. If you're really sick, he said, come to Ashgabat. For a grandmother a full day's drive away, a treatable illness turned into a death sentence. Then he closed the libraries. Villagers don't read anyway, he said. He banned opera. Ballet. The circus. He banned beards and long hair on young men. He banned dogs from the capital — he didn't like the smell.
