As a lawyer myself, if you can prove that you’ve never modified the car in any way, you could most likely win a large lawsuit against BMW for this. Look for a products liability lawyer. You can arrange to have them work for you on a contingency fee basis - meaning you don’t pay any money upfront but they will take a preset cut from the money you win. Best of luck.

Call them out publicly. Our X5M locked itself with our toddler and the keys inside on a hot day. I was alone, toddler was strapped in his car seat and it wouldn't unlock. The fire department had to bust out the window to get him out. BMW wouldn't even respond until my husband called them out on Twitter. They ended up paying for our window to be replaced but apparently it was a "known issue" with no fix. Sold the car after that because I was too scared it would happen again.
