@hannahtrenches: Let’s start getting a little more outraged at the SYSTEM!!! 🫩🫩🫩 I’m equally tired of women like Sydney Sweeney promoting things that can genuinely ruin people’s lives, AND I’m tired of women only seeing HER as the problem and completely missing the root cause: THE SYSTEM!!!⚙️⚙️⚙️ And I’m equally tired of people only speaking up when something directly affects them. Because yes, this advert is so so harmful for so many reasons: it promotes gambling, an industry that can cause a life shattering addiction; it uses sex to sell that product; and it deliberately used a controversial (& rightly so) celebrity to get people talking. But I think there’s another thing I think we’re missing. We will always find it easier to blame the woman than to challenge the system that created the situation in the first place. And I think fell for it!! Because look at what we’re all talking about: Sydney’s choices; what it represents; What women in sport should or shouldn’t look like. And meanwhile, the company that paid her to advertise gambling gets to sit quietly in the background, profiting from our outrage!! 😡😡I can simultaneously think that Sydney’s decisions are terrible AND believe that making her body the centre of the conversation completely misses the point. Women don’t have to be morally perfect, modest or perfectly respectable to deserve equality. If we want to talk about the sexualisation of women in sport, let’s talk about the systems that underpay women, undervalue women’s sport and commodify women ONLY when it benefits them. But I will not not turn a woman into a scapegoat for the system that was designed to profit from her. I think we need to start getting a LOT more outraged at the people making money from the problem, the same, if not more than the woman they put in front of the camera.
