Just for clarity, if you didn't max your tax savings for the year andcthe following year it reset to 46K. Does that mean your lifetime savings get affected as well?Meaning outstanding will be subtracted from the 500 000.

46k is the max limit not a must. let's make it simple: You put 46k, your friend put 30k and your ex put 10k in 2026 tax year. March 2027 all of you are starting over, the friend is not adding 16k to the 30k, the ex is not adding 36k to the 10k, everybody is starting a new limit of 46k from 1 March 2027 until end of February 2028. if the contributions remain the same: you will reach your 500k in 11 years (40k limit) on the 11th year your friend will reach 500k in 17 years (20k limit) on the 17th year your ex will reach 500k in 50 years
