I’m a plumber. Hard water is made up of calcium and magnesium. The only way to remove them is through ionic exchange. Those little shower filters will remove chlorine but will not remove hard water.

I have hard water, and several of my family members are master plumbers, so I asked them what filtered shower head they would recommend. They told me that most filtered shower heads are designed to reduce things like sediment and chlorine, but they don’t actually remove the calcium and magnesium that cause hard water. So I asked what I should use instead, and they said that if I actually want to treat the hard water, I need a water softener. They make shower-head water softeners, so you don’t necessarily need a whole-house system. A whole-house system here is over $3,000, while a shower-head softener is around $300. I didn’t believe them at first because I see so many hairdressers recommending filtered shower heads, so I looked into it myself. Turns out, they were right. Water softeners specifically remove calcium and magnesium.
