Relationships aren’t built on low-effort moments. Self-care gets weaponized like a permission slip for disappearing on people. Someone cancels on a friend who’s grieving, skips a commitment they made weeks ago, or goes quiet during someone else’s crisis, and calls it “protecting my peace” or “setting boundaries.” Relationships are built on what happens when things get hard. Who are you when a friend needs you at an inconvenient time, or when supporting them costs you something. Relationships require some tolerance for discomfort; treating any friction as something to boundary away erodes the reciprocity that friendship actually runs on. There is a real difference between rest that restores your capacity to show up and avoidance dressed up in wellness language. Real self-care usually makes you more available to the people you love, not less. When it’s consistently used to opt out of the harder parts of relationship — the inconvenient calls, the uncomfortable conversations, the showing-up-when-it’s-not-easy — it’s avoidance. The individualist, productivity-era version of wellness — where the self is the only unit that matters and other people’s needs are framed as threats to your peace — has crept into how we think about relationships. Don’t use rest as a cover story so you don’t have to admit you’re avoiding someone, or admit that supporting them is inconvenient right now. It lets people dodge the discomfort of saying “I don’t want to” or “I’m scared to sit with your pain” by reframing it as virtuous self-protection. Over time, this rewires what people expect from friendship: less mutual obligation, more transactional presence, and a growing sense that showing up is optional whenever it’s uncomfortable. I’m not saying you need to abandon self-care; it’s to become honest about which decisions are actually restorative versus which ones are just easier. . . #wellguide #selfcareisntselfish #hyperindependence #optimization #slowlivingforlife
