@theventure: Hyman ran the tests on himself before he sold them to anybody, and everything he has done since has been moving that same test down the price ladder. First it was his own clinic, where finding the cause took a doctor and thousands of dollars. Then the Cleveland Clinic made him founding director of its centre for functional medicine, which put the method inside a hospital system instead of a private practice. Then came the books, and one of America's biggest churches ran his programme: 15,000 people at Saddleback lost more than 260,000 pounds in the first year. None of that handed anyone the testing, which is the part that actually saved him. A book can tell you what to eat. It cannot tell you there is mercury in your blood. So at 63 he put the testing itself on sale for $499 a year. Function now has more than 500,000 members, has raised over $800 million, and was valued at $2.5 billion last November, with Matt Damon and Kevin Hart among the investors.
