What initially appeared to be a terrible accident quickly became something much bigger when the South Tower was struck at 9:03 a.m., confirming that the United States was under attack. This footage captures passengers aboard one of those flights as information slowly reaches them. There were no smartphones or social media feeds to immediately explain what was happening, so many people relied on flight crews, phone calls and whatever information could reach the aircraft. At 9:45 a.m., the FAA ordered every civilian aircraft in U.S. airspace to land at the nearest suitable airport the first nationwide grounding of its kind.
