We got an email at my last job about discussing wages leading to termination. I pointed out to my manager and program director that it's illegal to which they said "they'll fire you anyway.". Sir, I want them to- let me just email this to myself real quick.

the only reason why employers don't want you talking is because you'll find that they hired the new people for MORE. I was at a bank for 5 years, was head teller and everything. they hired a new guy with zero prior experience. he was making $19 an hour while I was paid $18.24. I went through 3 position wise promotions and 5 years worth of yearly promotions and made less than the dude they JUST hired.

My boss tried to tell me not to and I immediately asked him if he was aware that was completely illegal. He said, well we would prefer you didn’t. 😂

I’ve been in the grocery industry since 2013 and I’ve always told my guys how much I make per hour, even though it’s discouraged because I started at minimum wage. I don’t know the progenitor of this quote, but I’ve always been clear on my adversarial feeling towards the companies functioning on minimum wage hiring practices. The quote was “if I could pay you less, I would” and that’s minimum wage corporate thinking in a nutshell

I was working for a sub shop and a coworker got pissed because they found out new hires were being brought on with a higher pay than what we were given. the management told us no one is allowed to talk about it and if they continue will be fired. I laughed and told them go ahead fire us. I already had the information pulled up on my phone. management didn't like it.

Wow! I honestly had no idea! I was always told that Missouri (where I live) was a right to work state which meant you could be fired for any reason or no reason at all and talking about your salary with anyone else was a fireable offense. My dumb ass didn't care. I was just happy to have a job. But when a coworker became my boss and I was told just exactly HOW much more my other coworkers made (yes, they were all men, but that's a different topic) when we did the same job, I had to keep all that frustration to myself. Add onto that my struggles with marketing myself (I now know I am autistic with ADHD) and I could kick myself for all that money I could have (should have) been making. But since moving from job to job they never want to give you a huge jump from your last job, I was behind the 8 ball my entire career. Knowing I was being underpaid from each job and having to start at square one each time having to prove myself all over again.

We have union contract that indicates wages per years of service. No one discussed wages, but now I found out that many co workers make more than scale due to “side deals” of more responsibility outside of scope of contract.

You are federally protected! I was a hiring manager and my head manager wanted me to tell every new hire they could not discuss their wages. He hired a husband and wife paying the wife less when she had experience and the husband didn’t in this environment. He has repeatedly demeaned my MBA saying for contradicting him calling me argumentative and abrasive. I have been threatened over and over again and bullied for informing coworkers about their rights. Our state is both at will and right to work. I’m no longer a manager there, I am still educating coworkers. I excelled at business law and HR. They’re currently trying file padding. They still tell employees they can’t talk about pay. I intentionally interrupt and quote that act. Bwahahahahaha
