“We don’t understand.” A newly elected Reform councillor - who put herself forward to lead the council - has detailed all the things she doesn’t know about how councils work - and it’s a lot. Sarah Wood, who was elected to Kirklees council where Reform has 29 seats - six short of a majority - was to face Andrew Cooper, leader of the Greens-led coalition that is forming against her party. The Conservatives have refused to vote for the Greens, so the council is at a stalemate. Neither was able to secure a majority after two votes, and the chamber descended into chaos. The Conservative party’s Martyn Bolt called for a “suspension of orders” which would stop any councillor from abstaining from the vote. But Reform rejected that idea, claiming it was “undemocratic” as not all newly elected candidates “understand the constitution”. Fellow Reform councillor Rob Butler agreed, saying:

The Conservative party’s Martyn Bolt called for a “suspension of orders” which would stop any councillor from abstaining from the vote. But Reform rejected that idea, claiming it was “undemocratic” as not all newly elected candidates “understand the constitution”. Fellow Reform councillor Rob Butler agreed, saying: "We are being manoeuvred with a game play when we do not know the rules, and I do not think that is right." In a now viral clip, councillor Wood explained why she thought a vote was unfair but instead made herself appear somewhat ill-prepared for power. “I do not understand the constitution. I have not had sufficient time to read that as yet. I don’t understand what standing orders are, what they’re made up of, nor do I understand what an amendment is.” She added: “I suggest there is a possibility that we might vote for something that we don’t understand at the moment. We don’t understand the constitution. We don’t understand the standing orders. “We are at a disadvantage; we do not necessarily know what we are voting for and therefore this we consider not to be a democratic process.” Fellow Reform councillor Rob Butler agreed, saying: “We are being manoeuvred with a game play when we do not know the rules, and I do not think that is right.” The election of a new council leader was eventually postponed until next Thursday.
