She’s shut down because she’s at the end of a long journey of trying to connect emotionally with him. For months or years, she tried to communicate what she needed—empathy, emotional connection, and being understood—but he never truly listened or became attuned to her. Eventually, she stopped trying because she no longer believed anything would change. So now he can lie inches away from her and feel unwanted, while she is emotionally detached because, in her mind, the relationship has already failed at the connection she spent years trying to create. She’s not suddenly rejecting him; she’s at the end of having tried.

I did that for over 16 years, tried everything that I knew to yet I was left feeling the loneliest ever, like I didn't even exist in her eyes, like she made me her roommate and not husband. Just someone to raise the kids with and to split the bills while she freely did whatever she wanted as it was all her way or her way and my opinions did not matter. That ended over 12 years ago, I would rather feel lonely being single any day vs feeling it while having someone there.
