@history.piece: On the final day of an archaeological excavation in northern Israel, archaeologists uncovered two almost intact 1,700-year-old marble statues buried face down inside an ancient winepress. The discovery was made near the entrance to Binyamina, close to the ancient Roman city of Caesarea, and was announced in June 2026. Dating to around the 2nd–3rd century AD, the sculptures are protomes, showing the head and upper torso of figures from the Greco-Roman world. One carries a Greek inscription naming Lycurgus. Researchers are still investigating whether this refers to the legendary lawgiver of Sparta or Lycurgus of Athens, the 4th-century BC statesman and orator. Strangely, both statues had been carefully placed face down inside the collection pit of a winepress after it went out of use. Why they were hidden there remains unknown, although they may have been concealed for safekeeping. Archaeologists described it as a “once-in-a-lifetime discovery.” #Archaeology #roman #historytok #AncientHistory #ancientdiscoveries
