The yellowbar angelfish (Pomacanthus maculosus) uses its small, powerful mouth to pick food directly from the reef, feeding heavily on sponges along with algae and other small reef organisms. By constantly grazing and removing material from the reef surface, angelfish can influence which organisms have space to grow. Adults are easy to recognize by the large yellow patch on their sides, while juveniles look completely different, with dark bodies covered in curved blue and white lines.
