Their history is connected to the wider Arab tribal migrations across the Maghreb and, according to local genealogical traditions, to the Maqil Arabs and the lineage of Dhawu Ubayd Allah. This article presents the traditional genealogical account of these communities, with particular attention to their claimed Hashemite-Ja’fari ancestry and their historical settlement in eastern Morocco. 1. The Maqil Arabs The Banu Maqil were Arab tribal groups that became established in the Maghreb during the medieval period. Historical accounts, particularly those of Ibn Khaldun, describe their presence across areas of Morocco and western Algeria. Traditional genealogies divide the Maqil into several major branches, including: * Dhawu Ubayd Allah. * Dhawu Mansur. * Dhawu Hassan. Among these branches, Dhawu Ubayd Allah are especially important in the genealogical traditions of several Arab tribes in eastern Morocco. 2. Dhawu Ubayd Allah Dhawu Ubayd Allah are traditionally regarded as one of the principal branches of the Banu Maqil. According to local genealogical accounts, their descendants spread across the eastern Moroccan region, including the areas around Oujda, the Angad Plain, and Trifa. Some genealogical traditions further connect the lineage of Dhawu Ubayd Allah to the descendants of Ubayd Allah ibn Ja’far, presenting them as part of a Hashemite-Ja’fari lineage. This claim is preserved in certain genealogical traditions and family accounts. However, the exact genealogical chain linking all Maqilian tribes to the Hashemite-Ja’fari lineage is not uniformly accepted by historians. The distinction between traditional genealogy and independently documented historical evidence should therefore be maintained. 3. Ahl Angad Ahl Angad are Arab tribal communities associated with the Angad Plain surrounding Oujda in eastern Morocco. Local genealogical traditions identify them with Arab tribes descended from the Banu Maqil, particularly the branch of Dhawu Ubayd Allah. The Angad region became an important area of Arab settlement and tribal organization. Over time, different branches and families established themselves across the plains and surrounding countryside. Among the tribal names associated with local traditions are the Athamna, Ja’awna, and other branches linked to the Maqilian Arab ancestry. Ahl Trifa Ahl Trifa are Arab communities associated with the Trifa Plain near Berkane, in northeastern Morocco. According to local traditions, some Arab groups from the Angad region moved toward Trifa and established settlements there. These communities preserved their tribal identities and genealogical traditions while becoming part of the social history of the Trifa Plain. The Arab groups traditionally associated with Trifa include: * The Athamna. * Awlad al-Saghir. * Hawara Angad. The Athamna are particularly important in the genealogical traditions connecting Ahl Trifa to Ahl Angad and the Banu Maqil. 5. The Athamna and Their Traditional Genealogy The Athamna are one of the Arab tribal groups associated with Ahl Trifa.
