Percentage markup is a bad metric here. A restaurant makes much more on the $50 steak that costs them $20 than the $18 pasta. (and costs you much more as well, obviously)

I am ok with the profiting on the food if it is great quality,beautiful presentation and surroundings. It’s the add on charges and mandatory tips that so many demand that has become ridiculous.

To make a profit, restaurant food costs run 30% (their cost $3, charge $10). So in the pasta example, they’re only making an extra $1.50 above normal restaurant M.O. on a $10 dish. If I have a party of five that’s $7.50, the food was delicious and none of us had to make it or clean dishes afterward. Thumbs up on that.
