It helps me to remember that being a victim is a statement, not an identity. People tend to treat the word as a powerful reframing of your entire being. I have been a victim. I will not let it define me.

For me it was having to really digest that the things that happened to me, happened to a child. Because you don't think of yourself as being a kid or adult, you're just you. It took finding a childhood diary, and reading things in little kid writing that a kid should never write to let myself think about and sit with it

I...relate to this very hard. And this is why Lestat's 'I conduct the chaos' moment really hit home for me in TVL. Because thinking so certainly feels better.

I was talking to my therapist the other day, about this. I kept trying to explain everything away, and she kept saying “Ashley, you were the victim. THEY did this to you. None of it was ever your fault”. I don’t know why, but it’s just so hard for me to accept. Hopefully I’ll get there one day.

I'm sorry you had to go through that coping is the easy part the hard part is to detailed that coping mechanics and excepting that you were the victime you have made it though the other side of the tunnel and it is amazing to see I'm proud of you 😁

you should have known better mentality really kills you. I used to say that to myself all the time like you weren't so little, you should have known better you were old enough to know that this was wrong. and then I look at a 16 to 17 year old and all I can see is the baby. and I would never in my life tell them that it was their fault or that they should have known better, I think that you should have been protected.

It hurts to realize that I was powerless. Especially when I realized my daydreaming was maladaptive

Yeah... Don't worry love, we understand. I'm so happy you realized it. It's really not a nice experience when you are then trying to prove yourself you are right. It's like when the brain decided it was right and used proofs to backup the claim. We love you, I hope you don't ever see the person who hirted you.

my mind has always been uncomfortable with the idea of being truly helpless so I have trouble because intellectually I recognize how it wasn't my fault but the societal programing patriarchy and racial trauma make me uncomfortable with even acknowledging someone could have that much power over me

also I have the 'tism, and PTSD, EMDR really helped. if you can't find or afford a therapist who does it I have a couple really amazing YouTube playlists of the exercises that they do in those sessions. I can totally DM them to you or whatever. And like there are some things you need to know like going into it and that would be helpful. But yeah if you ever have an interest in that sort of thing for that particular stuff EMDR is amazing even when done at home

yeah you got to go through that progression. after I got through the it's my fault thing and I had accepted that I had been victimized and I was a victim I got really into the phrase that I was a survivor. And that's the one I'm much more comfortable with now because had some things happen to me that were not my fault I blamed myself for them if they were not my fault and I survived those things and I will stand above those people while they're in the dirt, I have told their names the trees in the cemeteries and the worms in the ground, I told the spirits and my guardians what they did. you are a survivor. you survived the event, you survived the victimization, and you are going to stand topside and live a fulfilling beautiful life. I found the best revenge is a life well lived never having to think about those awful people again except in some rare passing occurrence
