@soberjourno: Any advice for staying sober in the good times? I got engaged and it’s my birthday soon and it’s all making me a bit wobbly! Sorry for the downer, just trying to be as honest as possible and hoping others can relate! ❤️
It was my 60th last week and I went out for a couple of meals and just drank 0% beers. I genuinely didn't miss the booze. I also ran an 8k this morning so yay !

Because your brain says you "should" be able to enjoy a drink without a problem especially when we are happy BUT that is the sneakiness of alchohol.

My counselling skills course was delayed by a week so starts now on Tuesday. Though I checked and nobody has given us the key cards to get into the college building yet. So god knows. I’ve got that worry again “what if I’m shit at this counselling/therapy stuff?” None of it makes any sense. I’ve got qualifications, client hours, teacher feedback from other courses including the counselling ones I did last year as well as peer feedback from fellow students. But the worry is there. As is the meeting new people anxiety. I often can’t stand myself so I assume other people won’t like me either. At least to begin with. Had the same worry last year and made loads of new friends. There’s never any evidence to back up my worries. But they persist. Back when I did drink, I could go out and change how I felt for a bit. Now I can’t really. Social events are now noise from social anxiety at a thousand decibels and there’s no beer or cocktails or spirits to change that. Music gigs are really weird without alcohol. Or I find them to be anyway. Students are back in my city or starting to be so there’s lots of pub crawls and fresher nights etc. Usual stuff of finding drunk guys on the street claiming they’d “totally have decked five bouncers” if their friend hadn’t held them back. Pointing them in the direction of their halls of residence.

you cant feel true joy with alcohol in you. the alcohol takes the joy replaces it, assumes its identity

Sign up to regular fitness classes or sport that you participate in a group ….the benefit of physical health will keep your mind and motivation very far from drinking
