a lot of the farms around me have signs saying they are family owned, but, in cooperation with Tyson or Perdue. which feels like a very cost effective way to grow chickens

I worked for a profitability center for dairy farms. We found that smaller head counts, around 200-300 were most profitable because they were small enough for cows to have social hierarchy but large enough to benefit from some large scale techniques. Most profitable were the 100-150 range. Cows that aren’t super stressed produce more milk. The beef cattle farms on the other hand were better at higher levels since you didn’t want cattle to notice some of the herd was missing.

How’s the middleman business work then? Because the local small farms aren’t in the grocery chains. Does a middleman buy the stock at auction, slaughter, package and then sell to the grocery stores?
