@li0_564: Baron Roman von Ungern-Sternberg was a Baltic German–Russian cavalry commander and one of the most notorious White Russian leaders of the Russian Civil War. A fanatical monarchist and fierce anti-Bolshevik, he led a small but highly mobile force into Mongolia in 1920–21, where he defeated Chinese troops and captured Urga (modern Ulaanbaatar) in February 1921. He restored the Mongolian ruler Bogd Khan and attempted to turn Mongolia into a base for a wider anti-communist campaign. His army was eventually defeated by Soviet and Mongolian revolutionary forces, and Ungern was captured and executed in September 1921. He became known as the “Mad Baron” because of his extreme beliefs, harsh rule, and unconventional military campaigns. #History #war #edit #russia #mongolia
